A sawn-off shotgun was allegedly the weapon of choice after a man was shot in the leg in Sydney’s west. Police believe a love triangle is to blame.

Australia's domestic violence crisis

Police believe a love triangle is at the centre of a shooting in Sydney’s west that left one man with a serious injury to his leg and another before the courts facing a string of serious charges.

Adel El-Khodr, 42, faced Penrith Local Court on Friday charged with discharge a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, fire a firearm in a manner likely to injure a person, possess a prohibited firearm, and possess ammunition without holding a permit.

Police were called to the intersection of Richmond Rd and Cooper St, Cambridge Gardens, at about 11.15pm on Thursday night to reports of gunshots.

When they arrived, they found a 34-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg on Cooper St.

He was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition where he underwent surgery.

Police later arrested Mr El-Khodr at a home on Richmond Rd, and seized a sawn-off shotgun.

Police will allege Mr El-Khodr used the shotgun to shoot Bradley Egan.

“Police are alleging the incident is in relation to a love triangle between some parties which obviously escalated significantly to what transpired last night,” Detective Inspector Jason Pietruszka said in a press conference.

Mr El-Khodr did not appear during a brief mention of his matter before Magistrate Brian van Zuylen on Friday.

He did not apply for bail, and his matter was adjourned to April 16.
