A man with a history of domestic violence picked a woman up by the throat before choke slamming her on to a bench, a court has heard.

Blair Aaron, 32, appeared at Penrith Local Court after pleading guilty to two counts of intentionally choking a person without consent, two counts of common assault and one count of assault occasioning bodily harm.

Two additional charges of choking were previously withdrawn along with a count of common assault.

The court heard on one occasion Aaron grabbed the woman by the throat and then squeezed her until she struggled to breathe and her vision went hazy.

He then lifted her up by the throat and body slammed her on to a kitchen bench with enough force she went limp afterwards.

On other occasion Aaron grabbed the woman by the throat and slammed her into a banister, leaving a big red mark and bruising on her ribs.

Another time he shoved her into a cabinet.

The court heard the assaults occurred in the woman’s home, shortly after Aaron was granted parole after being imprisoned for several offences, including violence against another woman.

In a letter tendered to the court, Aaron wrote he “was a different person” who was “in a relationship he should have left and overstepped boundaries” when he was “struggling to adjust fresh out of custody”.

Also tendered to the court was a victim impact statement written by the woman, in which she described being terrified she “might die while being completely at his mercy” and continues to suffer residual fear.

A lawyer appearing for Aaron asked the court to consider a non-custodial sentence because he was engaging in treatment, working on controlling his impulses and becoming a productive member of society,

However, the court also heard Aaron had minimised the severity of the offending by blaming his actions on being “in a toxic relationship” with the woman having provoked him.

In sentencing, Magistrate Georgia Knight said the offences were examples of more serious matters dealt with in the Local Court, and she was not satisfied things were as optimistic as he made them out to be.

Aaron was sentenced to two years prison with 18 months non parole. He will be eligible for parole on November 22, 2024.
