A labourer on his P-plates who claimed he was working for Uber was busted with 41 bags of cocaine after exhibiting telltale signs of dial-a-dealer drug supply in front of police.

Officers patrolling Surry Hills on June 3 saw Blade Jeffrey Te Hu Ross’s Jeep Compass stop in the middle of the street, move away, then travel slowly back in the other direction before they saw a male jump out and head towards an apartment block.

Police suspected a drug transaction had occurred and pulled the vehicle over.

A subsequent search uncovered cocaine, MDMA, and cash stashed in various parts of the Jeep.

“The accused stated he had driven from Manly and dropped a customer in Surry Hills, claiming to be working for Uber.,” police stated in facts tendered to Downing Centre Local Court.

“When police pointed out that he was on his P plates and could not possibly be working for Uber, he changed his story – he now stated he had picked up this man from Penrith.”

When officers informed the Willmot man they were going to search his vehicle, he locked his phone and put it in the glovebox.

“Police located a black satchel bag in the front passenger floor, and inside the main pocket of the bag was $3700 in loose cash, and inside a zipped pocket was two 10-packs of resealable bags of white compressed powder police allege is cocaine with a gross weight of 14.6g,” police facts state.

“The accused immediately claimed the bag was not his, and he claimed the male who had been in the front might have left it there.”

The search also uncovered a Champion brand zippered wallet with $1850 cash and nine bags containing multiple blue and white capsules and dark crystalline matter with a gross weight of 20.4g, which police alleged was MDMA.

“When questioned, the accused responded ‘never seen it in my life’,” police facts state.

In the centre console, police located three more resealable bags containing white compressed powder, a small plastic lunch container with 18 resealable bags of compressed white powder, and $460 cash.

In total police seized 41 bags of cocaine weighing 30.5g, MDMA weighing 20.4g and $6010 cash.

At Downing Centre Local Court, Ross pleaded guilty to two counts of prohibited drug supply and one of dealing with crime proceeds.

His matter was adjourned to August 16 for sentence after Community Corrections compiles a sentencing assessment report.
