A Winston Hills hotel once again wants to prove it’s the sandwich king of NSW.

Growing up in Nepal, Manish Basnet never thought he would be responsible for creating an award-winning sandwich.

“I grew up near the Indian subcontinent,’’ he said.

“I usually had Nepalese food like rice, lentils and chicken and goat.’’

The 29 year old recalls demolishing his first steak sandwich at a pub in the city when he migrated 10 years ago.

“I love it. I can’t deny it,’’ he said.

“If someone gives it to me, nobody can say no.’’

Now The Winston chef’s steak sandwich is once again in the running to win the NSW Australian Hotels’ Association’s best sanga against 14 other pubs.

The hotel claimed the prize two years ago and is hoping the staple dish will shoot it to the top once again.

The toasted Vienna bread encases a 200g scotch fillet with aioli, rocket salad and caramelised onion.

Basnet says the bread is key to a winning sandwich.

“It’s important,’’ he said.

“We usually make it crispy brown and toasted. That makes it more crispy. It goes very well. “We do 200 on busy days like weekends and 30-40 on a normal day.”

Australian Hotels’ Association’s NSW chief executive officer John Whelan said the sandwich standard among nominees in Sydney was hight.

“You can’t beat a great steak sandwich at your local pub and it’s no surprise this category is one of the most hotly contested on the night,’’ he said.

“In Sydney and the bush the standard was exceptionally high. The team of independent judges had a really difficult task to limit it down to the top 15 finalists.”

The best sanga will be announced at The Star on Tuesday, November 19.
