Major hotel chain Travelodge will build a 100-room hotel at Westmead to cater for weary patients and scientists working at western Sydney’s $1 billion health hub.
The mid-range hotel will sprout up where Westmead Shopping Village now stands at the corner of Railway Pde and Ashley Lane, and be incorporated into the $100 million West Grove development opposite the train station.
TFE Hotels and Drill Management will manage and operate the hotel in the 14-storey development, which will comprise restaurants and a metro Woolworths and BWS liquor shop. Westmead Tavern will relocate within the complex.
TFE Hotels’ chief executive officer Antony Ritch said the hotel would serve a booming community.
“Not only will the Travelodge Westmead debut a fresh new interior design with warm timber and earthy tones, but, in partnership with the 2150sq m West Grove development, it will deliver long-term benefits as the thriving Westmead community continues to grow,’’ he said.
Parramatta Council approved Drill’s development application last year but it revised plans to eliminate 33 apartments and increased its medical services.
Drill chief executive officer Mark Hovey said the hotel would fill a gap in the Westmead Health Precinct.
“At the moment, if you are family living outside of greater Sydney and your child or other family member is transferred to Westmead, your only options for hotel accommodation are 15 minutes away,’’ he said.
“At West Grove you will be just metres away.
“For these people, as well as those whose family members need extended hospital stays, West Grove will be an oasis, a thoughtfully designed space where they can retreat, relax and find a good range of fresh food and be revitalised.”
The development links to the $1 billion Westmead Health Precinct along Darcy Rd and Hawkesbury Rd where the light rail is under construction.
Western Sydney Business Chamber executive director David Borger said the hotel would be a win for patients recuperating from surgery to medical professionals visiting for conferences.
“There’s a thousand scientists working at Hawkesbury Rd,’’ he said.
“You can see it (the hotel) working for patients, you can see it working for scientists and visiting medical specialists.
“It’s a fantastic site because it’s right on the door step of the light rail, the Metro rail and heavy rail, so you’ve got three rail trips descending on the site.’’
The State Government compulsorily acquired Westmead Arcade, behind the shopping village, to make way for the $2.4 billion light rail.
Construction at West Grove is expected to start next year and the hotel is slated to open in 2023.
