Gourmet meals, double beds, pilates classes and massage workshops await mothers at Westmead Private Hospital’s new $20 million luxury maternity suites.
The hospital has added 31 maternity rooms to accommodate and support person for mothers, 14 cots for high-care babies and 11 extra surgical rooms and an extra birth suite.
The hotel-style suites are $700 for a stay — four nights for a normal delivery and five nights for caesarean section.
The rooms are one-and-a-half times larger than standard rooms and a queen size bed, gourmet hamper, bathrobes for mums and daily newspaper.
There are also wide screen televisions and a private ensuite.
After spending three nights at Westmead Private Hospital following the birth of their first child, Lucas, Karen Tu and her husband David spent their last night in one of the new rooms.
“It was a nice surprise,’’ Mr Tu said.
“It didn’t feel like a hospital at all. It felt like going away on a holiday.
“Karen said we have to have another one so we can come back.”
The Liverpool couple enjoyed the light compared with the older part of the hospital.
“It’s a totally different feeling,’’ he said.
“The old one felt a bit cramped, there wasn’t enough natural light in there. The staff were great but it was hard moving around.”
Westmead Private Hospital chief executive officer Mike Flatley said the development was designed for the whole family and also included a garden.
“Overall, the expansion creates an environment that is modern, spacious and supported by experienced doctors and midwives,’’ he said.
When the labour’s over and women are discharged from hospital, mothers and their babies are offered free pilates classes and infant massage workshops.
The post natal program also includes home preparation, bathing, settling and feeding.
