A-League: Work begins at WS Wanderers football park, crowd allowed for derby v Sydney FC

Updated: Vital work has begun at the new Western Sydney Wanderers football park as the club prepares for A-League kick-off.

Work has begun on nine all-weather, five-a-side football pitches at the new Wanderers football Park.

The fourth stage of the project started after the turning of the first sold at the site at Blacktown International Sports Park on Tuesday.

This stage will cost $6.25 million and includes the construction of football pitches, offices, function room and change rooms, amenities building for the southern end of the football park and landscaping and supporting infrastructure.

Stage four has begun at the Western Sydney Wanderers new football grounds.

The NSW government provided $5 million to the Wanderers for stage four as one of 22 projects in round two of the greater Sydney sports facility fund.

The stage four project is scheduled for completion on the first of 2022.

“Wanderers Football Park will provide an integrated high-performance facility that will improve Western Sydney Wanderers’ talent development pathways and community programs,’’ said NSW Minister for Sport Natalie Ward

“This will ensure the Wanderers continue to develop players who will dominate not just the A-Leagues but Asian and World football.”

CROWD GREEN-LIGHT FOR WANDERERS, SYDNEY FC DERBY

OCTOBER: Fans will be allowed out in full force - and voice - for the A-League’s Sydney Derby in November.

A decision by the NSW Government means 22,500 fans can attend the match between two of the biggest rivals in the A-league on November 20 at Parramatta.

The news comes on the same day the Matildas are hosting Brazil in their second match of a series which saw the return of international sport to Sydney on Saturday after a long Covid lockdown.

The decision means the CommBank Stadium can have 75%, or 22,500 capacity for the big A-league stoush.

The catch is that due to current NSW Government Health Orders, only fans from Greater Sydney - which includes the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, Wollongong and Shellharbour - are eligible to attend.

It is also compulsory for all adult ticket holders (aged 16+) to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Tickets for the match go on sale to the public on Ticketek at the end of the week.
