UWS: Students can gain uni entry with Year 11 results

Students who have had their Year 12 studies disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic have been offered the chance to apply for a place at Western Sydney University based on their Year 11 results. FIND OUT HOW YOU CAN APPLY

Western Sydney University will offer university places based partially on Year 11 results.

STUDENTS who have had their Year 12 studies disrupted by COVID-19 will now have the option of using their Year 11 results when applying to go to Western Sydney University.

WSU has announced it will look at both Year 11 and HSC results for its True Rewards early entry program and give admission based on whichever result is better.

But every student must complete their HSC to qualify for early entry, even if the Year 11 results are used.

WSU people and advancement vice-president and registrar Angelo Kourtis said the university understood the significant impact COVID-19 has had on Year 12 students.

“We are very mindful of the disruption some students are experiencing at the moment. It’s tough enough to prepare for university in your final year so it’s a lot of pressure for them to have,” Mr Kourtis said.

“We are providing people with a number of options to get into university.

“We have built on our very successful True Rewards program where we look at how students performed in their HSC subjects not the ATAR.

“Now, we will look at both the HSC results and the Year 11 results and pick the best option.”

Mr Kourtis said while it was important to offer flexibility, he did not want to undermine the importance of completing the HSC.

“The big difference with our program is that we require people to do the HSC. We want to send the signal that you can’t ignore the HSC. Schools and teachers have been very supportive of what we are doing,” he said.

Early entry can be gained for a large number of courses including law, with only a few exceptions, such as medicine where students are required to sit the UMAT.

“Where possible our policy is to be inclusive and not exclusive. Historically, we have had nearly 3000 people apply under True Rewards. I think it will add a lot of benefit to the student experience,” he said.
