For the last eight years, the GWS Giants Academy has been shining a spotlight on the wealth of untapped AFL talent in Western Sydney.
The academy has opened up a previously non-existent pathway for the area’s best and brightest young Aussie rules prospects to showcase their abilities at the national level.
Players such as Giants star Nick Shipley and draftee Kieren Briggs are already two shining examples of the academy’s success and it’s next major prospect is starting to make some waves.
Toongabbie 18-year old James Peatling has been well and truly making his presence felt in the North East Australian Football League.
The former Pennant Hills and Westbrook junior has been carving it up for the Giants through four games this season, averaging 22 disposals, 4.8 marks and more than a goal per game.
Peatling also claimed a NEAFL Rising Star nomination from the Giants 48-point round seven win over Southport, collecting 24 disposals, taking five marks and laying three tackles in a dominant performance.

“It’s humbling,” Peatling said of his nomination.
“Especially playing in a new role last week. I didn’t go in having any expectation playing across half back. Just playing my role was the main focus for me and I’m humbled by it.”
Peatling said it was an honour to be following in the footsteps of fellow local Giants Academy products in Shipley and Briggs.
“It’s big to be another kid who’s come from Western Sydney, especially because in the last few years we’ve had a bit of success with Kieren and Nick,” Peatling said.
“It’s a good opportunity to expose yourself to AFL and show that Western Sydney can play footy.”
