Toongabbie: Bungaree Rd shops to get an upgrade

It doesn’t need to be “over the top”, but traders at a western Sydney shopping strip are welcoming a spruce-up of the area.

Toongabbie traders are preparing for an upgrade of their shopping centre for the first time in over a decade.

Parramatta Council recently undertook a consultation process with the community in an effort to improve the “look, feel and function” of the “much-loved” shopping centre at the corner of Bungaree Rd and Bethel St.

The improvements incorporates the streetscape and public domain, and the council has sought to determine the key issues and “what would make it a more enjoyable space to spend time”.

The centre includes a hairdresser, liquor shop, post office, milk bar and butcher.

Bungaree Butchery owner Steve Carlaw, who has worked there for 35 years, said he would like to see more signage at the centre.

“I don’t think anything needs to be over the top, just to pretty up the place a little bit,’’ he said.

“It’s a convenient little shopping centre. It’s more of a shopping centre where people pop in and park conveniently out the front.

“I’ve been here 35 years so people get service and they keep coming back. The shops were built in 1964. I do think they do need a bit of an upgrade.”

The council is reviewing feedback to determine what kind of upgrades to carry out as part of the $3.2 million Better Neighbourhood Project.

More consultation will be undertaken on draft designs in May.
