Sydney floods: Parramatta pelted with rain

Disaster was averted on Monday morning when a large tree crashed on Evans Rd at Dundas Valley and landed on power lines as the wild weather hammered Sydney.
Parramatta SES volunteers responded to the incident after a tree fell on the road about 4.30am and warned drivers trying to get between Kissing Point and Pennant Hills roads to avoid Evans Rd.
“Our crews responded to make sure that no vehicles ran into the tree as it is at the bottom of two blind corners,’’ a message posted on Facebook said.
Parramatta Council and Energy Australia “will have their hands full with this one for most of the day” so drivers were warned to stay clear of the area.
At Parramatta’s Charles Street Wharf, entries were blocked, deterring the usual stream of spectators who take footage and snap photos of the weir spilling and the banks of the river collapsing.
As of Monday morning, water levels were rising but benches along the river’s banks were not yet submerged as they were during the severe February and March floods.
Sydney Ferries has suspended services from the Charles Street Wharf to Rydalmere, where services will operate to Circular Quay.
RSL Taxis has been running shuttle services from Parramatta wharf to Rydalmere for commuters not deterred by the inclement conditions.
Driver Ross Raslan said three cars at the rank had shuttled more than 20 people by 10.30am.
“Passengers are getting to where they need to get to without a problem,’’ he said.
“We’ve had some tourists and staff as well. We’re giving them the best experience as they can get. We’re calling ourselves ferries on wheels.’’
