A teen has been charged after a ‘cowardly, vicious’ attack on a food delivery driver in Sydney’s west was caught on CCTV.
Footage shows the 20-year-old delivery driver sitting on a street bench on his phone at The Kingsway outside Wentworthville Railway Station just before 10pm on Monday May 18 when he was approached by another man in a grey hoodie.
The man unleashed a powerful kick to the driver’s head, sending his phone flying on to the footpath.
Police said the attacker threatened the driver with a knife and demanded money before forcing him to walk to a nearby ATM to withdraw cash.
As they were walking, the assailant drew out a larger knife before the driver ran into a nearby pizza shop and alerted staff as the attacker fled, taking his scooter, food delivery bag and wallet containing cards and cash.
Following a public appeal for help, a 15-year-old boy was on Thursday arrested and taken to Wentworthville Police Station.
He was charged with robbery armed with an offensive weapon and was granted bail to front court on August 26, 2020.
Detective Acting Superintendant Despa Fitzgerald said the attack was unprovoked.
“It is a cowardly and vicious attack on someone sitting there having a break.”
The attacker fled on the driver’s scooter down The Kingsway, then Station, Dunmore and Lane streets and Fullagar Rd. It was last seen turning into a park near Finlaysons Creek.
