The Winston Hills Hawks Junior Rugby League Club celebrated Women in League this month at John Curtin Reserve, their home ground.

This was the seventh consecutive year for the popular family day which also raised funds for breast and brain cancer.

Players took to the field in pink socks while families and friends wore pink and beanies in support.

Resident and Hawks mum Cheree Georges is being treated for brain cancer and enjoyed the day with her husband and two children.

“I found out five years ago I had a brain tumour the size of a golf ball which was blocking my spinal fluid flowing freely around my brain,” Mrs Georges said.

“One week later Dr Mark Dexter, an amazing neurosurgeon, performed surgery to remove the tumour successfully. I opted not to have radiation hoping it wouldn’t return but unfortunately it did. Dr Dexter performed his second surgery late 2017 and unfortunately it was too dangerous to remove some of the tumour cells so this time radiation was a must.

“After 30 sessions of radiation to the brain I’m still recovering from the nausea and fatigue but on the mend.

Women in League has become a much-loved annual event at the club.

“I feel very blessed that I had options. There are so many others suffering who have run out of options and this is where research into finding a cure for brain cancer is so critical”.

Former NRL player, Dally M winner and proud grandfather Kevin Hastings also attended to support his grandson who is in his first season with the Hawks.

“What a great day it was seeing both boys and girls enjoying footy,” he said.

“The atmosphere was so positive with parents of both teams applauding the children’s efforts and achievements on both sides. It was a great occasion to acknowledge the tireless work women in our clubs do and raise funds for these fantastic charities.

The touch football game between mums at the conclusion of the day, was a crowd favourite.

Hawks club president and father of two, Craig Culnane, said he was proud to be part of a club with such a strong sense of community and thanked the eight women among their 15 person steering committee, together with the many other mums, grandmothers and female helpers for all they do behind the scenes.
