Matthew Minogue earns John Eales Scholarship to Bond university
Rising rugby star Matthew Minogue is ready to take the next step in his rugby union journey after being awarded Bond University’s prestigious John Eales Scholarship
When it comes to rugby, there are not many more prestigious names than John Eales and there aren’t many more prestigious accolades in the game than Bond University’s John Eales Scholarship.
For the first time since its introduction in 2014, the 2019 scholarship has been awarded to not one, but three of the most exciting young talents in Australian rugby.
In celebration of the Queensland university’s 30th anniversary in 2019, three up-and-coming stars received a full scholarship to study the degree of their choice at Bond University plus a living bursary and one-on-one mentoring from Wallabies legend, John Eales.
Among them is 18-year-old Matthew Minogue.
The Beecroft local has been playing rugby for 14 years and was the vice captain of The King’s School’s 1st XV side.
He also starred for the Australian School’s Barbarians squad this year and has represented NSW on four occasions over the last four years.
Despite his impressive resume, Minogue said he “couldn’t believe” the news.
“I was in shock but I’m so very grateful for this opportunity at my age,” he said.
“I see it as just the beginning of an amazing rugby journey.”
It’s a journey that Minogue hopes will include even more representative accolades.
“I would love to one day expand on my representative rugby to date- take the path of representing the Queensland Reds and then the country,” he said.
“I want to increase my skills and remain fit and healthy and injury free as much as possible.
“I know it will take commitment and dedication both on and off the field (but) the move makes me excited- excited to explore new things and go through new experiences.”
While a professional rugby career is the main goal, Minogue is equally excited about his plan b- a degree in property.
“The industry is forever changing and the fact that it is so broad, it will expose me to many opportunities,” he said.
“I figure property is always a required asset, for domestic or for commercial business. I have already been exposed to contracting in several industries in this field. It is also something I can travel with if need be and do in other countries.
“Obviously, the scholarship is a huge deal, but to me it means a new opportunity into exploring any different pathways that may open up, whether that be footy related or uni related, as well as any opportunities that may arise after university.”
