It’s just as well Lidcombe-Auburn Cycle Club rider Keira Will likes an uphill battle because she’s got one heading her way.

The NSW cycling talent has raced off with a swag of state and national titles in the past year as an under 15s rider but from this weekend’s Sydney Cup, Will is stepping up a grade.

Will, who won Australian crowns in the road race and individual time trial along with the points, scratch and individual pursuit races on the track, will now compete against older and stronger riders in the under 17 ranks.

But it’s a challenge the schoolgirl, who prefers climbing to sprinting on the road and trains six days a week for up to two hours, is ready to embrace.

“I like the physical aspect of pushing yourself and seeing how hard training pays off,’’ said the 14-year-old, who is also part of the High Potential and Gifted Education program at her Concord High school.

“It is more frightening to be a first year than a second year. Most people just assume second years will be faster and stronger and better but I’m hoping I can do well.’’

Riding since she was four and racing on a banked track since she was just seven, Will is a rising stars of one of Australia’s most successful sports at Olympic and world level.

And she hopes to one day be competing alongside and against the best women in the sport with Olympic selection her long term goal.
