A 37-year-old grandmother-to-be who allegedly spat on police after a fire at South Wentworthville overnight was refused bail after her lawyer pleaded with the magistrate to let her be present for the birth of her first grandchild, due next week.

The woman, who pleaded not guilty at Fairfield Court today, allegedly scratched one officer and kicked another several times after they were called to a blaze that engulfed the granny flat at the back of a Centenary Rd property about 9.30pm.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Checks showed the woman, a single mother to three children aged 15, 11 and 9, had two outstanding warrants for assault, resisting police, intimidating police and making 61 vexatious phone calls when she lived at Muswellbrook.

Police facts tendered to court showed she has been charged 49 times.

Today, she appeared at Fairfield Court wearing a black and grey hoodie, after being charged with assaulting three Cumberland policemen last night, when she was allegedly intoxicated and failed to recall the incident.

Legal aid Gary Anderson said the accused wanted to be present to support her pregnant 15-year-old daughter next week.

But Magistrate Michael Price refused bail after saying her “criminal interaction with the justice system can be described as extensive” with “multiple, multiple, multiple” incidents and she had failed to appear for 21 incidents in court.

“The instances where that interaction has involved aspects of violence or aggression are many, many indeed,’’ Magistrate Price said.

Last night, after a fire alarm woke her while she slept in the lounge room, the accused called police when officers Luke Stoker, 24, and Paul Cooper, 37, arrived.

Police statements showed she thrashed hands and waved her finger at police.

She was handcuffed and pushed one of the officers to before she allegedly struck his chest twice and scratched his forearm.

She then allegedly kicked his colleague in the buttocks and groin.

Paramedics had to sedate her before she was treated for smoke inhalation and taken to Westmead Hospital, where she allegedly spat at policeman Abbas El Abbas, 30, after yelling at him: “You’re a one-striper, you f***** s*** skin.”

She was placed under arrest with a bleeding nose and stated: “It’s not my fault, it’s because I woke up and I didn’t know where I was.”

She was accused of making 61 vexatious calls to Muswellbrook police station between August 24 to 25 last year when she allegedly demanded police release her defacto partner from custody.

Police statements said she said: “F****** let him go you c****. F*** you. I’m going to stab you c****. I’m going to send the big fell up there.”

The matter for outstanding warrants is due at Muswellbrook Court on Monday.

The South Wentworthville matter is due back at Fairfield Court on July 24.

It was the third incident of alleged police assault in Sydney yesterday after Constable Jacob Vella, 24, was stabbed at Sadleir and a 14-year-old girl punched a policewoman at Hornsby last night.
