Sentencing day set after killing girl at Meriton Parramatta apartments

A baby-faced murderer who asked his victim for her phone passcode instead of calling an ambulance predicted he was “gunna get 25 years” after killing her. Today he learned the date for his sentencing.

True Crime: Three of the worst serial killers in history

A sentencing date has been set for killer Kristian Kovaleff, who fatally stabbed a 17-year-old girl multiple times at the Meriton Apartments at Parramatta on December 18, 2020.

At the Supreme Court on Friday, Kovaleff, who had his blond hair neatly groomed, appeared via video link and briefly acknowledged Judge Robert Allan Hulme with a wave before the sentence was set for November 11.

A day was set aside for the sentencing and will be almost two years since the murder.

The girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, died from multiple stab wounds after Kovaleff burst into the bathroom of the apartment she and a friend had rented for the night when they planned to celebrate her 18th birthday two days early.

The former Guildford resident also left her friend in a critical condition after he knifed her during the terrifying ordeal a week before Christmas.

After his stabbing frenzy, he told the girl who survived he had “always been sick in the head and wanted to kill someone” — including her — on more than 10 occasions.

He told her he wanted to chill out instead of calling an ambulance for the victim. As she lay dying on the floor staring at the roof and gasping, Kovaleff asked her for her phone passcode.

While still brandishing the knife, he paced up the room and told the survivor “I’m gunna (sic) get 25 years”.

“I’m gunna get a lifetime in prison. I knew if I did this, I’d regret it.’’

His bizarre behaviour continued when he started singing I’m a Bomb and “I’m about to blow up” and flicked on jazz on the TV before telling the survivor he would move the victim to the bathroom.

Court papers also revealed that on the day of the brutal attack, he went to Bunnings Villawood twice and bought duct tape, rope and a handsaw, which he bought “in case the body didn’t fit in the boot and he needed to chop it up”.

The victim was rushed to Westmead Hospital but was pronounced dead at 11.43pm.

The other girl underwent surgery and was transferred to the ICU during her eight days in hospital.

Kovaleff turned himself into police at 2.45am the day after the fatality.

He was charged with murder and wound with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He pleaded guilty to the offences on March 31.
