Proposal for Sydney Olympic Park Wharf to be renamed Wentworth Point

Plans are being floated to rename busy Sydney Olympic Park Wharf in an effort to stop people ‘walking around looking lost’ after getting off a Parramatta ferry.

Plans are being floated to rename Sydney Olympic Park Wharf to Wentworth Point in an effort to accurately reflect the suburb where people arrive when they leave the ferry.

Parramatta councillor Patricia Prociv, who is suggesting the name change, said many residents and tourists caught the ferry to the wharf but were confused when they instead arrived at Wentworth Point, which is 4.5km from landmarks such as ANZ Stadium, or up to an hour’s walk and a 15-minute bus ride that runs every 30 minutes.

“Some people just want to go to Olympic Park because they know it from the Olympics,’’ she said.

“If we want to encourage tourism we need to give people accurate information.

“I’ve been to Wentworth Point and seen people wandering around lost and I said to them ‘Are you looking for the bus? and they said ‘No, we want to go to Olympic Park’, and it’s confusing people.’’

The wharf opened for the 2000 Olympics before the suburb Wentworth Point was created.

Wentworth Point resident Clement Lun said even though Western Sydney Parklands, to the immediate west of the wharf, was classed as Sydney Olympic Park, he supported the wharf name change.

“In a sense it is a bit of both, but then from a commuter point of view, it is a commuter wharf for Wentworth Point,’’he said.

“From a way-finding point of view I think it will make more sense for it to be named Wentworth Point.’’

Sydney Olympic Park Business Association chief executive officer Allison Taylor also backed the name change, saying “it made sense’’ for commuters and tourists.

She added that it would be hypocritical to oppose the plan because “we get really cross when Sydney Olympic Park is called Homebush’’.

Cr Prociv will raise the suggestion at Monday night’s council meeting. If the chamber supports the motion, it will write to the Geographical Names Board requesting the change for consideration.
