Two primary school boys, including the son of a political candidate, have been hospitalised after a ute collided with them in Sydney’s west.

Police said in a statement that the two children – both aged 11 – were riding a motorised scooter along Gordon Road at Auburn, when they entered the roundabout at Union Street about 4pm.

At the same time, a white Toyota Hilux entered the roundabout and struck the pair, knocking them off the scooter, police said.

The driver of the Toyota Hilux did not stop after the collision. Registration plates could not be seen.

Independent candidate for Blaxland and Auburn Councillor Ahmed Ouf confirmed his son was one of two boys injured in a hit and run incident on Friday.

“The driver fled the scene, leaving the boys with serious injuries,” Cr Ouf said in a statement posted to social media.

“One of the boys is our youngest son.”

The incident was reported to Auburn police shortly after the boys returned home, with paramedics arriving to assess the pair.

The boys were treated for scratches and lacerations before being transported to The Children’s Hospital in Westmead for further assessment, a NSW Ambulance spokesperson said.

Dr Mohamed Assoum, campaign adviser for Cr Ouf, said the family had since viewed CCTV footage.

“The boys were flung a couple of metres into the air before hitting the ground,” Mr Assoum said.

“The family is seeking help from the community to collect any information to help identify the driver.”

Police have since launched an investigation into the incident and are appealing to anyone who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to call Auburn Police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
