Cavoodles take the lead on becoming the most favoured pooch breed
From Parramatta to Hornsby, Cavoodles are the most popular breed of dog. But it hasn’t always been that way. See how your area has changed over time.
Across Sydney’s suburbs, cavoodles are the most popular dog — but that has not always been the case.
From Parramatta to The Hills and across the northern suburbs, the small sized cross between a poodle and cavalier king charles spaniel is the most popular choice for a dog.
But in years gone by, maltese breeds were the top dogs across western and northwestern Sydney.
A look at the registered dog breeds in the 2018 to 2019 financial year as well as 2008 to 2009 and 1999 to 2000 shows how pup preferences have changed over the decades.
In 1999 to 2000, when the statewide register began, the maltese was the most popular breed in the Parramatta, Hills and Ryde LGAs and the third most popular in Hornsby’s LGA.
Ten years ago, maltese or maltese terriers were in the top two breeds in The Hills, Parramatta, Ryde and Hornsby.
But by last year, cavoodles had knocked maltese dogs off their pedestal and claimed the top spot in all four areas.
The Critchfield family, who live in Riverstone, have had their cavoodle Max for five years.
Darnell Critchfield said she chose the breed because her children were young at the time and she wanted a dog that was “playful” but also hypo-allergenic.
Cavoodles have low-shedding coats and are considered low-maintenance for grooming and well suited to families.
Mrs Critchfield said she was not surprised that cavoodles were the most popular breed across many areas of Sydney, but said she was surprised but how much they can cost now — usually around $4000.
Mrs Critchfield said Max was a “wonderful” dog.
“He’s very cuddly … but he’s happy to bounce around and play and loves to go for walks,” she said.
