After almost 50 years, Parramatta will get a new double-storey police station.
Plans have been submitted to Parramatta Council for the demolition of the existing building at the corner of Marsden and Phillip streets, which opened in 1974.
Under the project, the $30 million station will house about 200 staff and include the expansion of the carpark facing Phillip St.
There are about 200 employees based at the existing station including police officers, traffic and highway patrol staff, prosecutors and the youth command.
The project will be funded from the government’s $108 million multi-purpose police station program.
A timeline has not been set but is expected to take between 18 and 24 months to complete once construction has started.
Parramatta Acting commander Thomas Barnes said he welcomed the project.
“While collectively police attached to the Parramatta PAC remain focused on continuing to support our local community, both generally and during this particularly difficult time, they would of course welcome any changes to our existing accommodation that further enhance our ability to do so,’’ he said.
He said that extended to “improving the experience of community members who attend the police station to provide information, seek services or support”.
The state government’s Sydney Central City Planning Panel will determine the project.
