Pendle Hill: Car hits cyclist, 70, at Great Western Highway

A 70-year-old cyclist suffered internal injuries after he was struck by a hatchback driver trying to avoid a collision with another car on a major Sydney highway.

Police have appealed for witnesses and drivers with dashcam footage to help investigate a 70-year-old cyclist who was hit on the Great Western Highway, Pendle Hill, on Saturday.

Police said the man was hit just before 10.30am after reports a Honda Civic hit a cyclist.

Cumberland Inspector Rick Agius said the man suffered bleeding to his pelvis after he was struck outside a block of units near Pendle Way.

Paramedics treated him and took him to Westmead Hospital, where his condition deteriorated before he was found to be suffering internal injuries.

He has since undergone surgery.

Police said a 21-year-old man driving a blue Honda Civic was travelling behind a Nissan Tiida on the highway when he swerved to avoid a collision, hitting the cyclist.

As inquiries continue, police are appealing for any motorists who were in the area at the time and may have information or dashcam vision of the incident to come forward and contact police or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
