A blueprint to revolutionise the western Sydney skyline with skyscrapers reaching “maximum” flight path limits has been revealed.
It has been touted to create 50,000 jobs, 14,000 homes and “fantastic public spaces” at the geographical heart of Sydney.
NewsLocal can give western Sydney-siders their first look at plans to send Parramatta sky-high in order to create thousands of jobs following the COVID-19 pandemic — endoresed for public exhibition by NSW Planning.
Planning Minister Rob Stokes said the vision for Parramatta would “lay the foundation” for tens of thousands of jobs and homes and set the standard for development of new buildings and public spaces across the river city.
“From increased building heights, for a dynamic city skyline, to almost two million square metres of new commercial floorspace, new cultural spaces and fantastic public spaces, this proposal will shape the Parramatta CBD for generations to come,” Mr Stokes said.
The government’s blueprints restricts building heights around vital public open space to protect sites such as Parramatta Square, the Parramatta River foreshore, historic Lancer Barracks and Jubilee Park from overshadowing.
Meanwhile, the vision will also allow towering skyscrapers that reach the flight path limits of up to 243m high, and includes major expansion plans for the commercial core of the CBD.
One tower reaching the flight path limit has already been approved by the NSW Government for Aird St, Parramatta. However, artist impressions for the massive planning proposal suggest several skyscrapers could also be built to the same height.
Parramatta state Liberal MP Geoff Lee said the plan would ensure Parramatta would “remain the heartbeat of western Sydney”, while Parramatta Mayor Bob Dwyer said the plan was an exciting step in the transformation of the city.
“Council initiated this proposal to help us realise our shared vision for the Parramatta CBD – an economic leader with a thriving commercial centre that attracts world-class businesses and offers incredible lifestyle opportunities for residents,” he said.
The vision for Parramatta’s future will be exhbited by NSW Planning in the coming weeks.
