THE police force will be bolstered with an extra $220 million invested in its infrastructure and resources.
While an extra 100 police officers will be deployed later this year, conversations will continue to determine how many extra police officers are needed in the front line moving forward.
In an address to the NSW Police Association in Wollongong, Premier Gladys Berejiklian will announce the redevelopment of 14 police stations including a brand new Parramatta station, an investment in road policing and roadside drug testing and a boost to police detecting extremists in jail.
Hurstville and Port Macquarie stations are the other two to be completely rebuilt as well as eight others redeveloped at a cost of $118.5 million.
Roadside alcohol and drug testing and regional road enforcement will get an $83 million boost and $26 million will be injected into police monitoring prisoners and parolees who are considered a terror risk.
“As premier, I have the deepest respect for the men and women of the NSW Police Force,” Ms Berejiklian will tell 200 officers today.
“We are proud to make this record investment but our work doesn’t stop here — we will continue to support our police with funding and the tools they need so they can keep our communities safe.”
In addition to these new officers, the government is working with NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller and other key stakeholders to determine how many more officers are needed, and where they will need to be deployed.
Parramatta state Liberal MP Geoff Lee said the new multimillion-dollar police station was a win for the west and would ensure local police have the resources they need for generations to come.
“Parramatta is home to a large and diverse community and a thriving business district with thousands of people travelling to Sydney’s second biggest CBD each and every day,” he said.
The latest quarterly Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOCSAR) show 15 of 17 major crime categories are stable or fell in the 24 months to December 2017.
Mr Lee said a new station would further support local police to identify, disrupt and drive down crime.
“Once built, the new $30 million station will further boost the capacity of our hardworking men and women in blue, and provide modern facilities and equipment they need to prevent and disrupt crime and, ultimately keep visitors and the community safe.”
Police Minister Troy Grant said the government was committed to providing the support and resources police need to do their job and keep the state safe.
“Local police put their lives on the line protecting our communities, responding to violent incidents, and supporting victims of crime,” Mr Grant said.
The 2018/19 budget allocation for the upgrade of Parramatta police station will allow for the final planning and development approvals.
