The transformation of Parramatta Quay is under way, with construction starting on a $16.35 million escarpment boardwalk hugging the foreshore.
Australian company Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure will build the river-level boardwalk, which will complete the cycling and walking path connecting Parramatta Park to Melrose Park on the northern side of the river.
The boardwalk is opposite the Parramatta ferry wharf. Every year, almost 1.5 million people enjoy walking and cycling along the river foreshore as it passes through the Parramatta CBD.
Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer said the path, which was expected to open in early 2021, would transform the city.
“I am excited to see this game-changing project progress and I look forward to watching it take shape over the coming months,” he said.
The project will also include new sets of stairs to Stewart and Macarthur streets to ensure safe and direct access for the public and students of Macarthur Girls’ High School.
The State Government is funding the project with its cycling infrastructure fund and Transport for NSW’s active transport program.
Parramatta state Liberal MP Geoff Lee said the path would be the best one along the Parramatta River.
“Residents will have the opportunity to walk or ride to work from the Parramatta CBD to Melrose Park without going on the road,” he said.
“This will transform the way people move around our city and suburbs, and enable everyone to explore and enjoy our beautiful area safely.”
In October, Parramatta Council released plans for the precinct, which includes the transformation of Charles Street Square.
The upgrade includes an improved riverfront walk, generous ramped walkways, a new garden terrace, and an amphitheatre with terraced seating and views over the quay.
