Western Sydneysiders will have to swelter through another three summers before they can unfurl a towel and take a dip at Parramatta Pools but the project is drawing closer and fresh vision of the aquatic centre has been released.

The artist impressions show a 50m pool, 10-lane outdoor pool with seating, a 25m, indoor recreational pool, an indoor learn-to-swim pool; indoor aquatic playground, multi-purpose community rooms, a cafe, spa and sauna and a fitness centre — including a modern gym and program rooms.

The complex also features changerooms and a 200-space carpark.

Grimshaw Architects, Andrew Burges Architects and McGregor Coxall have designed the aquatic and leisure centre.

Parramatta Council released the artist impressions and 3D flythrough footage after it lodged the development application for the pool’s main works to begin.

The State Government and the council are funding the project, which will be built at the corner of Park Pde and Pitt St, in the Mays Hill Precinct.

Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer said the development application marked a milestone for the project.

“It’s exciting to see it all coming together,” he said.

“The people of Parramatta are keen to see this significant community facility built and council is working hard to deliver it as soon as possible.

“With indoor and outdoor heated pools, and a wide range of wellbeing and fitness amenities on offer, this impressive centre will no doubt be enjoyed all year round by competitive and recreational users of all ages.’’

Acting NSW Sports Minister and Parramatta state Liberal MP Geoff Lee said the NSW Government was proud to support the world-class aquatic centre.

“We are a step closer in our partnership with Parramatta Council to delivering a state-of-the-art sporting and recreational facility for western Sydney,’’ Mr Lee said.

“This aquatic centre will cater for competition, learn-to-swim classes, recreation and relaxation and will be the pride of Parramatta.”

The decision to knock down the original Parramatta War Memorial Pool to make way for the $360 million Bankwest Stadium caused community outcry and a concerted campaign to save the popular swimming hole.

It was demolished in 2017 and the new stadium was officially opened last year to rave reviews.

Architect Andrew Burges said the design aimed to integrate the project into Parramatta Park.

“We believe that blending it into the natural park setting will really broaden the appeal of the Parramatta aquatic and leisure centre and make it a popular and enjoyable experience for Parramatta’s diverse and growing community,” Mr Burges said.
