Construction on Parramatta Aquatic and Leisure Centre is on course to start after the council gave the green light to lodge a development application for the $77 million project.
Parramatta Council approved the lodgement for the “main works” development application at its Tuesday night meeting.
The aquatic attraction will include a heated 10-lane 50m pool, 25m pool, fitness centre and 212-space carpark and fitness centre on the corner of Pitt St and Park Pde.
The State Government and the council will splash out $38.5 million each for the all-year round recreation drawcard which will sprawl over 12,000sq m and include learn-to-swim and hydrotherapy pools underground on the former golf course site flanking the train line.
Councillor Martin Zaiter said the council’s step on Tuesday night was long overdue and showed it was ready to make it a shovel-ready project.
He also indicated the project could be finished ahead of its due date in summer 2023.
“We as councillors are fighting this as hard as we can to have it ready sooner,’’ he said.
“We don’t want to get people’s hopes up but getting the DA through (for lodgement) on Tuesday night was the first step.’’
Parramatta Pools was controversially demolished in 2017 to make way for Bankwest Stadium.
In September, a consortium of architects — Andrew Burges Architects, Grimshaw Architects, and McGregor Coxall — were announced as the aquatic centre’s designers.
