Parramatta Labor candidate Andrew Charlton using North Parramatta house as campaign office

Labor’s Parramatta candidate has been using the North Parramatta property he purchased as campaign headquarters but he denies speculation about him not moving there.

Voters cast their votes early at Parramatta pre-poll

Labor’s Parramatta candidate has been using the North Parramatta property he purchased as campaign headquarters while still living in his eastern suburbs mansion.

During the election campaign, Andrew Charlton’s opponents have questioned his intentions to move his family to the electorate, and this month photos posted on Facebook show staff using the house he bought as a campaign office.

A leaked post on a private page shows one room of the modest four-bedroom house set up as an office.

The image led one critic to query Mr Charlton’s intentions to move his wife and three children from their $16 million Bellevue Hill mansion to the electorate.

The person, who wished to remain anonymous, said the millionaire could afford to rent a proper campaign office and suspects the North Parramatta home was just an investment property.

The image captures two volunteers in the house with a message that states: “Bring your pup to work day is everyday on this magnificent campaign.’’

However Mr Charlton’s campaign spokesman told the Parramatta Advertiser on Monday he was still moving to the neighbourhood, but the process would not be completed until after the May 21 poll.

“During the extremely busy campaign period, with days often starting at 6am and finishing well after dinner time, Andrew has been splitting his time between the home he recently purchased in Parramatta and his other residence,” the spokesman said.

“Once the election has been completed Andrew and his family will finalise the move to the electorate.”

The spokesman did not answer questions about whether his children were enrolled in local schools.

On Saturday it was revealed Mr Charlton, the ex-adviser to former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, listed his place of residence as a Woollahra rental owned by his wife, barrister Phoebe Arcus.

He blamed an oversight for failing to enlist in the Parramatta electorate since buying the $1.9 million house at North Parramatta.

The person criticised the house being used as campaign headquarters.

The person said Mr Charlton could have bought a house at Oatlands, an exclusive enclave in the Parramatta electorate which would be “closer to his lifestyle”.

A Liberal Party member and former Parramatta councillor Andrew Jefferies, said the area would be an ideal place for Mr Charlton’s family to move regardless if he won the election.

“The electorate’s got the No.1 school in the state in James Ruse (Agricultural High School). We’ve got Kings, we’ve got Tara. We’ve got the best rated public schools such as Carlingford West.’’

He said Mr Charlton should not take his role for granted.

“We have some of the best schools anywhere in the state, some of the best parks, reserves and recreational facilities and we’re well connected by transport links.’’

The Liberal Parramatta candidate Maria Kovacic’s office is in the Parramatta CBD.
