Parramatta councillors remain tight lipped surrounding the resignation of general manager Greg Dyer, leaving much conjecture to the reason he gave away his $514,000 a year role.

Mr Dyer quit last night, just months after his contract with the council was extended by three years.

He offered no reason behind his departure other than “the time was right to seek new challenges”.

“I thank Parramatta’s councillors, past and present, for the support they have given me. I would also like to offer particular thanks to all the staff of the council, who have been integral to the city’s ongoing success.”

Council sources claimed tensions between the general manager and the councillors had played a role in Mr Dyer’s decision to exit.

“He felt really uncomfortable,” the source said.

Relations further suffered when councillors voted not to invest in 3 Parramatta Square at a meeting on Monday night.

“He advised the council one way and they chose not to follow and that upset him,” another source said.

Former Parramatta mayor and current Cumberland councillor Paul Garrard said he had a “successful” period working with Mr Dyer, but noticed tension during council meetings.

“There was something festering there,” Cr Garrard said.

“I watch the live streams and sit in on the meetings and there is something you can sense that is perhaps not the best relationship.”

Councillors signed a non-disclosure agreement regarding the resignation, which, if broken, could mean the council would need to pay out the remainder of Mr Dyer’s three-year contract.

Cumberland Council was recently forced to pay out general manager Malcolm Ryan after he resigned earlier this month.

Parramatta Lord Mayor Andrew Wilson sang the general manager’s praises following his four years with the council, saying he would leave big shoes to fill.

“Greg’s leadership over the past four years has been visionary and has brought great success for Parramatta. He successfully steered the council through a complicated transition following the local government amalgamations in May 2016 and has overseen the emergence of Parramatta as Sydney’s Central City,” Cr Wilson said.

Mr Dyer will finish in his role on January 19 and the council will soon begin the process of recruiting his replacement.
