Parking Finder app developed for Parramatta CBD

An app that helps drivers heading to Sydney’s second CBD locate parking has been developed. But is it helpful?

It won’t solve exorbitant parking fees but Parramatta Council hopes a new parking app will ease congestion in the CBD.

The council and start-up Spot Parking developed Parking Finder in an effort to help drivers locate potential on-street and multistorey parking spaces before they leave home.

The app won’t identify vacancies but informs drivers where carparks are, time restrictions and costs involved.

Parking Finder will also show carpark photographs, ratings and provide entry height details for multi-deck lots.

Councillor Steven Issa, who is the chair of the Smart Advisory Committee, said drivers searching for a parking spot caused about 30 per cent of traffic congestion in the CBD.

“This app is one of the measures we’re using to alleviate it,’’ he said.

But some drivers are sceptical it will solve Parramatta’s parking woes.

Mandy Nguyen of Yagoona and Thanh Le, of Wetherill Park, regularly drive to Parramatta to dine out and labelled the parking “shocking”.

“We come here for dinner and with all the new restaurants coming up there’s no parking, especially with construction,’’ Miss Nguyen said.

The friends park at the Eat Street carpark, in between Horwood Place and George St,

where they pay $7 for two hours.

Liverpool’s Melinda Mladenov used the same carpark but forks out $21 for parking each day wherever she can find parking in the Parramatta CBD.

“It would be good if you could get an app for free parking in Parramatta,’’ she said.

Parking Finder is in addition to the Safe School Parking Finder Spot Parking developed with the council last year.
