Years of planning and consultation have culminated with the Mays Hill master plan release.
The plan, which has been developed by NSW Government and the Parramatta Park Trust will include basketball facilities, a suspended land bridge and picnic areas.
Environment Minister Gabrielle Upton said the space has the potential for more, with the added decision to house the new Parramatta pool on the site made last year.
“As Parramatta continues to grow, Mays Hill will provide vital recreational area and
green open spaces, including City of Parramatta’s new aquatic facility,” she said.
“We’ve listened to all that feedback and I am excited to reveal a plan that the
community can be proud of.”
More than 1500 suggestions were given from groups, residents and workers which will change the 20 hectares of the former golf course into a public space. The cost is expected to reach $40 million, which will include the land bridge, expected to cost $20 million.
The plan includes spaces for jogging, barbecue areas, shaded picnic spots, water fountains, bathrooms and a land bridge connecting the precinct to the northern parts of Parramatta Park.
“Securing recreational and green open spaces in Parramatta is a win for all residents,”
Member for Parramatta Geoff Lee said.
The site has come under fire for its lack of lighting and CCTV monitoring when mother Prabha Kumar was stabbed to death while walking through the area between Argyle St and Amos St in 2015.
The plaque in her honour will remain along with a dedicated path way.
The construction of the site is expected to start in September this year.
