A new collaboration between Australian racing and fashion royalty has taken fashion inspiration straight from the field.
The Australian Turf Club has combined with designer Manning Cartell to create a range of garments inspired by jockey silks for the Everest Carnival.
The Everest Carnival Silks collection aims to celebrate the stories behind spring racing’s biggest names using the colours and patterns of jockey silks.
The first piece in the collection was worn by model Robyn Lawley at the Colgate Optic White Stakes Day on September 15.
This weekend, GWS Giants star Heath Shaw will wear a suit jacket at the De Bortoli Wines Golden Rose Stakes Day.
The jacket’s lining uses the colours of The Autumn Sun, currently the second favourite to win the Golden Rose 1400m.
“Being a good friend of Kerrin McEvoy and him being the jockey that’s riding Autumn Sun, I thought that was a good idea,” Shaw said.
Recovering from a knee injury, Shaw said he was “looking forward to a great day at the races”.
“I’ll be backing Autumn Sun and cheering Kerrin home,” he said.
Shaw has fond memories of attending races with his dad as a child growing up in Victoria, and is still an “avid races goer”.
He said he was “looking forward to having a nice custom made jacket and silks” for Saturday.
“We don’t often get to put a suit and tie on,” he laughed.
Designer Cheryl Manning said:
“At the heart of Manning Cartell’s design philosophy has always been a love of luxurious textures, brilliant colours and unique prints, so we were excited to collaborate with the Australian Turf Club to develop exclusive racing designs inspired by the jockey silks themselves,” she said.
The collection will be auctioned off at the end of the carnival, which finishes on October 13.
Proceeds from the auction will be donated to charity Dress for Success Sydney, which provides women in need with free professional clothing and support.
