King Charles III and Queen Camilla have confirmed their Australian tour itinerary – and a barbecue at Parramatta Park is on the tour for the royals, marking another visit to Sydney’s second city for the monarchy.
The pair will tour Canberra and Sydney from October 18 to 23 for the first time since they ascended to the throne following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on September 8, 2022.
Buckingham Palace has released details of the five-day visit, which will begin in Canberra where Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will welcome him to Parliament House.
Charles and Camilla will attend engagements in Sydney on October 20 and 22 when a community barbecue will be held at the UNESCO-listed park, along with a visit to Old Government House.
Parramatta Lord Mayor Pierre Esber welcomed the “great” news.
“There’s still a lot of people that like the royals and I think it’s fantastic for the city,’’ he said.
The British monarch and his family are no stranger to Parramatta.
He visited Parramatta Park in 1994. Queen Elizabeth II visited Old Government House in April 1970 to open the restored museum.
In 1986, she donned a yellow dress to celebrate the opening of Parramatta Stadium and, two years later, elevated Parramatta’s position of mayor to Lord Mayor to mark the city’s bicentenary.
The King and Queen’s visit to Parramatta next month will most likely be six years to the day his now-estranged son Prince Harry included a visit to Macarthur Girls’ High School at Parramatta with wife Meghan Markle on their tour Down Under.
On October 19, 2018, the newlyweds spoke about social justice with the students and watched a dance performance.
