Besides the thrill of finals footy in September, May might just be the most exciting month on the NRL calendar.
As the 2019 season approaches its halfway point: the cream of the crop has been established, the cellar-dwellers are already kissing their season goodbye, the middle of the pack are fighting tooth and nail for every win and State of Origin speculation is running rampant.
With every footy fan, pundit and tragic constantly throwing their team selections out into the aether, how do players avoid getting caught up in the whirlwind?
For Parramatta half Mitch Moses, it’s the intensity of the week-to-week competition that keeps him fully focused on club footy.
“The NRL is such a difficult, close competition, you can’t afford to let your mind wander when you’re preparing for a game on the weekend,” Moses said.
“I have been working as hard as possible every day since before pre-season started and all of my focus is on the Eels.
“If I am playing well and the team is playing well, the rest will look after itself.”
While Moses admits that Origin selection isn’t at the forefront of his mind, he can’t deny just how much playing for NSW would mean to him.
“Pulling on that Blues jersey would be a dream come true,” Moses said.
“I have been a huge supporter of the team since I was a little kid and would love to represent NSW in that arena.
“But selection is out of my hands — the Parramatta Eels are my only focus.”
