The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A wedding guest whose donuts caused so much smoke they were spotted by a news chopper high in the sky has been branded “an appalling exhibitionist” after facing court.

Sefton man Emre Atmali, 24, has lost his licence for six months and narrowly avoided jail after admitting he was behind the plumes of smoke at a pre-wedding event in Auburn on Good Friday.

Atmali faced Burwood Local Court on Thursday after being charged with “prolonged sustain loss of traction” for his nuptials hooning earlier this year.

The court heard about 100 guests stood at either side of the street as Atmali tore through doing burnouts on Sheffield St prior to the couple tying the knot.

“He was a guest at a wedding showing off,” Magistrate Lisa Stapleton said.

“Your client is an appalling exhibitionist if someone had lost their life at the wedding it would have been a tragedy.”

Court documents show the incident was alerted to police after a 7 News chopper spotted the chaos on the suburban street.

“Plumes of smoke were visible from streets away causing a nearby news helicopter to alert police,” the agreed statement of facts stated.

Vision from social media of the wild event showed a number of cars doing burnouts before a delirious crowd of pre-wedding guests along the side of the road.

“The smoke caused significant visibility issues for other road users and put the lives of wedding guests at risk,” police previously said in a statement.

Atmali’s lawyer Chaddy Mardini told the court he lost his job as a truck driver when police suspended his licence and recently lost his job at a warehouse due to the greater Sydney lockdown.

Court documents state police caught up with Atmali at the family home where he made full admissions to police that he was the one behind the burnouts.

Magistrate Stapleton fined Atmali $550, disqualified him from driving for six months and handed him a two-year good behaviour bond without conviction.
