Selective government school James Ruse Agricultural High was the best performing school in the state — a title the school has held for 23 straight years.

Al-Faisal College and Alpha Omega Senior College both from Auburn finished strongly in the top 50 schools.

One of James Ruse’s top HSC students this year Raymond Li told the Advertiser he really enjoyed his time at the school.

“James Ruse has been very good. It is competitive but at the same time the people are very nice and we help each other.”

Raymond finished top in the state in two subjects including Chemistry and mathematics Extension 1.

Education Minister Rob Stokes congratulated the students who took part in the rigorous HSCs this year.

He said students should not despair if they did not get the results they were after.

“Remember there are so many paths to success and your HSC doesn’t define you.”

Better Education rank each school according to its HSC results taking into consideration the percentage of distinguished achievers. A distinguished achiever are those students who ranked in the highest bracket (band six or extension band four) for a subject. This means they scored 90 to 100 per cent in a subject.

To work out the percentage of distinguished achievers the marks are weighed against many exams were sat at a school. For example, if students at a school complete a total of 1000 HSC subjects in 2018, and 500 return as distinguished achievers, then the school’s distinguished achievers’ percentage will be 50 per cent. Schools are then ranked according to that percentage.

Catholic and private schools finished strongest in the west, Carlingford High School was the only public school to make the top 100 cut at number 70.
