A crackdown on rubbish dumping and theft is under way at Granville to tackle the number of trespassers raiding bins for plastic bottles and filling their pockets at the Woolworths Return and Earn centre.
The recycling machine at the Woolworths Louis St carpark will shift to the other side of the lot, further from homes.
Cumberland councillor Steve Christou said the council, Woolworths and the machine’s operators, Tomra, were ramping up security and maintenance on the site by organising more regular pick-ups.
“The machine had become a location for people that had started a professional side business with utes and small trucks full of recycled bottles pulling up to use the machine,’’ he said.
“Granville is not a ghetto and I will not sit back and watch while these appalling conditions were allowed to take place.”
Abandoned trolleys, rubbish bags and piles of garbage strewn across the carpark are a regular sight.
“We had rubbish stinking away and apart from that it was blocking carpark spaces in that supermarket,’’ Cr Christou said.
“It was blocking a dozen carpark spaces.’’
Granville is one of the state’s busiest recycling centres and long queues are common, Cr Christou said.
He said perseverance would ensure a better outcome for residents.
“This is a huge win for local residents and hopefully will put an end to an ongoing local issue,’’ he said.
