An elderly man who was killed crossing a busy Granville road was about to buy a gift for his daughter who gave birth yesterday.
Neighbours said Dib Zaiter, a grandfather in his mid 80s, was trying to reach the bus stop near his house so he could travel to Parramatta to buy a present.
But the pedestrian was fatally struck about 11.15am on Woodville Rd, near the intersection of William St.
A woman, who did not wish to be named, said she heard the man’s daughter in-law screeching and being restrained.
“They were saying ‘he’s gone, he’s gone’,” she said.
Resident Robin Pollack said the man was probably aged in his mid-80s.
“He was frail but not too frail,’’ she said.
“He’d get around on his own all right.
“I saw him a week ago shuffle across the road to catch my bus.”
Umah Pathmanathan said: “It’s such a tragedy. So sad to see him go and in front of his family.”
The truck driver stopped after the crash and spoke with police at the scene.
Emergency services are still in the area and diversions are in place around the crash site.
The drivers have not been charged as police have confirmed it was an accident, but have said both are shaken after the crash.
