The return of the Parramatta Two Blues Rugby Union Club, a 1500-seat grandstand, gym and medical rooms are planned when Granville Park at Merrylands reopens.
Cumberland Council is evaluating tenders for the construction of the multi-use community sports pavilion at the park after demolition works started in January.
The upgrade will also include a kiosk, referee and medical rooms, an office and social function space, field resurfacing, lighting, fencing and irrigation.
Cumberland Mayor Steve Christou hopes the overhaul, due to be completed in December 2020, will attract locals and visitors from outside the area.
“Today it looks like a sports field overgrown with weeds but soon this area is going to be transformed into a multi-use community sports pavilion that residents and sporting groups can use all year round,” he said.
Granville ward councillor Joseph Rahme anticipates the additions will make Granville Park a recreation drawcard once again.
“Granville Park used to be the main sporting venue for the Parramatta district; a venue for rugby league, rugby union, cricket and athletics,’’ he said.
“Following this vital upgrade, it’s going to be an amazing venue for players and spectators and we will be able welcome the Two Blues Rugby Union Club back to their home ground once again.”
Demolition works started at the site in January. Cumberland Council injected $8 million and it also received a $2.74 million grant from the State Government.
