A magistrate questioned why Graham John Mellers broke into a North Parramatta home to steal toilet paper and flyscreen when he could have just waited for the council clean up to pick up some of the items from the median strip.

Mellers, 54, faced Parramatta Local Court for sentencing on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to stealing the dunny paper, flyscreen mesh, a DVD, electronic microphone cord at the Barton St home on November 9.

Bemused Magistrate Tim Keady told Mellers his criminal record did not assist him and questioned the contents of his unusual heist.

“If it was sitting on the footpath waiting for council clean up it would be different but it’s not,’’ he said.

The Oatlands man told Mr Keady he only just moved to the area and in hindsight would rethink his actions.

He was convicted and fined $400.
