Free vehicle registration for Sydney’s heavy toll users

TOLL road users will get a reprieve from the rising cost of commuting. But not all M4 motorists will be cheering.

TOLL road users will get a reprieve from the rising cost of commuting.

Sydney’s west are now digging into their pocket pay for the upgraded M4 but if you spend more than $25 a week on tolls, the State Government is giving you a bit of a breather.

Premier Gladys Berejiklian announced drivers will be eligible for free vehicle registration if they spend more than $25 a week, on average, over a 12-month period on tolls.

This will be a saving of about $358 a year on registration costs for many motorists, with potential savings of up to $715 a year.

The rego rebate will be available for all privately registered cars, utes, four-wheel-drives and motorcycles from July 1, 2018. It will be backdated to July 1, 2017.

What does that mean for M4 road users? If you’re travelling the shortest route — Church St Parramatta to James Ruse Drive to and from work, five days a week you won't qualify. But if you’re on it for the long haul, from Church St to any of the other city-bound exits five days a week, you’ll be eligible.

If you’re headed to the city via the M2, the shortest trip is $2.10, so won’t be enough, but if you take the full length of the toll ($7.10 each way), you’ll be saving.

“The government has made it a priority to drive down the cost of owning a vehicle with big savings being delivered through reforms to CTP green slips and the introduction of a FuelCheck app,” Premier Berejiklian said.

Western Sydney Minister Stuart Ayres said the change delivers a fair go for drivers who are paying their way on the toll road network.

Private motor vehicles weighing more than 2795kg, such as trucks, are not included in the scheme.
