El-Bayeh to expand Cafe El’s and open deli at Winston Hills

A popular eatery in northwest Sydney is expanding with a gourmet deli and captivating dishes. The cafe also has plenty of jobs going to help feed the crowds from October 11 onwards.

Western Sydney's Secret Bars

Foodies are in for a treat at Cafe El’s where the owners are expanding the eatery and adding a delectable delicatessen and dessert bar to Winston Hills Mall — but management is finding it difficult to fill positions.

Owners Matthew El-Bayeh and Nadine’s recruitment call-out for 15 positions to work at the renovated, larger Cafe El’s and the new My Deli has struggled to attract applicants to the embattled hospitality industry during Covid.

“People are probably waiting to see whether they’re going back to their old jobs and if the government incentives stop,’’ owner Mr El-Bayeh said.

“Our industry is stop and start so it’s an uncertain industry at the moment.’’

But with the deli opening when restrictions lift on October 11 and the expanded cafe to seat 160 people when it reopens in November, hopefuls are sure to be busy at the El empire.

“Come along and join the team,’’ Mr El-Bayeh said.

“We’re a family-oriented group of people and there’s good opportunities to grow and learn.’’

A smorgasbord of smallgoods, cheeses and baguettes are sure to entice customers to My Deli, which will occupy the former Michele’s Patisserie cafe.

Along with traditional sandwich cold cuts, gourmet offerings include eight baguettes such as the Godfather (sopressa salami, double-smoked ham, Swiss cheese, salami paste (nduja), prosciutto, Swiss cheese, prosciutto, roasted capsicum, rocket and black truffle oil.

“It’s pretty full on,’’ Mr El-Bayeh said.

Indeed, but nothing linked with the El-Bayeh brand is done in halves.

The oversized baguettes menu also boasts the Fat Tony (sopressa salami, double-smoked ham, rocket, Swiss cheese and pesto aioli), the Skinny Vinny (roasted vegetables, rocket, Swiss cheese and pesto) and the three-cheese toastie with Buffalo, provolone and Swiss cheese.

That’s the savoury taken care of and the dessert bar also upholds the indulgent theme at My Deli.

“We’ve got a massive cabinet with three layers of shelving so it will be all filled with a massive selection,’’ Mr El-Bayeh said.

That means “all the good stuff”. Think jam doughnuts, cakes, croissants, fruit flans and, of course, coffee.

On the other side of the shopping centre, Cafe El’s verandah will grow by 100sq m to allow for 160 diners at post-Covid capacity to dine on cafe staples and adventurous weekly specials that have featured fried green doughnuts, and a modern Australian flavour mixed with Mediterranean and Middle Eastern twists.

“It is out there and it’s going to be even more out there when it reopens because we’re installing a woodfired pizza oven with a Middle Eastern influence for breakfasts,’’ Mr El-Bayeh said.

Prepare for za’atar pizza and fattoush salads and when afternoon arrives, take advantage of the bevy menu at the fully-licensed eatery.

Mr El-Bayeh, who also runs El Burger in the mall, has run Cafe El’s for 10 years.

“I’m just giving the customer what the locals want,’’ he said.

“I’m a local boy too.

“We’ve been doing what the customers ask for and we will continue to do that going forward. We evolve with it and we always have.’’
