IT HAS been called a “game changer” by the State Government and a “modern-day colosseum”. Now Western Sydney Stadium has hit its first major milestone with construction beginning.
Demolition of the old stadium and Parramatta pool has officially drawn to a close and the foundations of the $360 million stadium are now being built.
Plans released by the government show the 30,000-seat arena will include a viewing room, where fans can get up personal with players in the warm-up area.
“The Western Sydney Stadium will create a new benchmark for fan experience,” Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said.
“Fans won’t miss a second of the action, enjoying the game the way it should be watched — up close.”
The stadium will be the first on the east coast to have a viewing room, with Perth Stadium the only other one in the country allowing for a rare look in.
The stadium design is also intended to enhance crowd experience, with the seats positioned at 33.9 degrees; making it the steepest in the country.
“Stadium seating will enable what’s known as a C-90 sight line — which is better than all rectangular stadiums in Australia,” Mr Ayres said.
The next six months will see the majority of construction completed, including the pouring of 26,000 cubic metres of concrete and installation of 4300 tonnes of steel to form the seating bowl and roof.
The stadium is on schedule to be opened mid-2019, with the fit-out expected to start in June 2018.
“More than 100 LED TVs spanning 1000 square metres will be placed 360 degrees around the stadium, with sub woofers in the roof providing surround sound,” Mr Ayres said.
“Hundreds of LED lights will illuminate the seating bowl and roof in team colours, meaning every event can be themed to match the playing teams, lighting up the surrounding sporting precinct.”
