The deadly coronavirus has forced Parramatta and Auburn Lunar New Year celebrations to be postponed following public health concerns.
Parramatta Council was planning to host festivities at Centenary Square on February 7 but has delayed the event in response to performer and community concerns about the virus, which started in Wuhan City, China, and has claimed 106 victims worldwide.
Parramatta Lord Mayor Bob Dwyer said music, dances, workshops and food stalls were planned for the event.
“Lunar New Year is one of the City of Parramatta’s most important and popular cultural events,’’ he said.
“It is unfortunate that we won’t be able to celebrate on February 7, but this decision has not been taken lightly.
“Council will continue to monitor the situation and is consulting with performers, stallholders and community representatives, about rescheduling the event.”
“I would like to thank our community for their continued support, and wish everyone a very happy Lunar New Year.”
Cumberland Council has also postponed its celebrations which were due to be held in Auburn on Saturday.
“We acknowledge that current circumstances are not ideal for celebrating in a safe
and healthy way and council has a responsibility to consider public safety,’’ a spokeswoman said.
“The decision is unfortunate but is in the best interests of our community.
“A new date for the event will be announced in the near future and be contingent on
advice from public health authorities.”
