A 28-year-old woman managed to escape her BMW X5 four-wheel-drive just moments after the bonnet burst into flames at Station St East in Parramatta on Tuesday.
Police said the woman noticed sparks near the Great Western Highway when she called her husband who advised her to pull over about 8.30am.
She had just dropped her children off at school and was in the vehicle alone.
She pulled up opposite the Commercial Hotel and got out when flames tore through the front of the luxury vehicle.
A detective passing by raced to a cafe at the train station to grab a fire extinguisher and helped douse the flames before four firefighters contained it.
The car remained at the scene before 10am and is expected to soon be towed away.
NSW Fire and Rescue Superintendent Adam Dewberry said there was no indication it was an electric vehicle.
“We do see this a bit where a car caught fire under the engine,’’ he said.
“Quite often it does consume the whole car because they don’t have a suppression system nearby as an extinguisher.’’
