How to get to Balaka Falls

NESTLED in Sydney suburbia is one of the prettiest little natural falls around. Balaka Falls is nestled between Carlingford and North Rocks and is the perfect escape from the busy Sydney life.

The moment you start walking, you hear your breathing, your feet crunching on the ground and lorikeets, magpies and parrots making noise above. If there’s been enough rain, as you near the falls, you’ll hear the water tumbling over the rocks.

Access isn’t difficult.

There are access points at Norfolk Place, Parkland Rd, Lindisfarne Cres, Karingal Ave and Ferndale Ave.

The 20 minute trek takes the walker deep into the Hunts Creek Reserve. If that’s too much, there’s a 200m option that will still awaken the senses to the flora and fauna.

When you arrive at the waterfall, view it from the top and jump across the stream if you dare or hang down the bottom and watch the water cascade down. There’s even a few spots to lay a picnic rug and enjoy the view.

If you want to see water trickling down, head along after a day or two after rain, but be sure to wear shoes you don’t mind getting a little dirty.

Hunts Creek is a perennial stream that starts in an underground stormwater drainage system, emerging on the corner of Parkland and Jenkins roads, Carlingford.

It flows west through the reserve, crossing The Kings School to fill Lake Parramatta.

Parramatta Council is in the midst of making the waterfalls even more accessible to the community.

The council is spending $75,000 to improve the walking track surface, formalise the Ferndale Ave walking track entry, put new sandstone steps around the waterfall site and upgrade existing steps.

Work has begun and will be completed by September.

If you find injured wildlife, call Sydney Wildlife 9413 4300 or WIRES 8977 3333.
