Pedestrians have once again been reminded to tune out and put their mobile phones away after a 17-year-old boy was hit by a car while looking at his device at Auburn this morning.

The Colo Heights boy, who is understood to work in Auburn, was walking south along St Hilliers Rd near Rawson Rd when a westbound silver Civic sedan hit him just after 9.30am.

Auburn Inspector Karl Leis said he suffered lacerations to the ribs and head and was rushed to Westmead Hospital after looking at his mobile phone.

“He was looking down at his mobile phone while he was walking along,’’ Insp Leis said.

“Whether he was texting or looking down, he was distracted.

“We believe it’s a timely reminder for people to look around be aware of their surroundings, particularly in this day and age when people are using phones and iPods, and the like.’’

The boy is in a serious but stable condition with non life-threatening injuries.

The sedan driver, a 31-year-old Kingsgrove man, was taken to Auburn Hospital for mandatory testing.
