Artexpress: Oscar Browne’s photos on display

Oscar Browne is proud his artwork is “rubbish” after it was one of 8552 submissions chosen to be showcased at the Art Gallery of NSW.

Rubbish-strewn shorelines at some of Sydney’s most famous beaches have inspired Oscar Browne’s submission for Artexpress.

The former King’s School at North Parramatta student was chosen to have his work, Dark Matter, displayed at the Art Gallery of NSW exhibition, which opened on February 6 and runs until April 26.

The exhibition features the 48 of the most outstanding artworks of HSC visual arts students in 2019.

Browne, of Beecroft, was appalled at the pollution ruining the shores of beaches such as Manly and Bondi.

“I was at the beach one day and I was struck by the amount of plastic and micro plastic on the shoreline,’’ he said.

“I thought it’s such a big issue for a small piece of plastic and can often be overlooked.’’

The 18 year old used his photography skills to magnify the issue to match its enormity.

“I just blew up the plastic to make it seem larger than it really is,’’ he said.

Photography proved the right platform to manipulate the image.

“It’s flexible, you can edit it to manipulate it to change the impact you have,’’ he said.

Browne, who will this year study media and production at UTS, has also got a thrill out of seeing others view his work.

“The other day I went to the gallery and no one knows I’m the artist and it’s a really nice feeling when people look at it and try to dissect it.
