A western Sydney knifeman had only been living with his housemates for a week when their disagreements erupted into violence, with a tiff over Snapchat sparking a bloody fight.

Andrew John Newsome, 26, was sentenced in Parramatta District Court last week to an intensive correction order for two years and seven months.

He had previously pleaded guilty to reckless wounding over the daylight attack in Granville, where he knifed an 18-year-old man and his 26-year-old girlfriend in November 2023.

Documents tendered to the court reveal the intense melee that unfolded, much of it captured on CCTV from the Grimwood Convenience Store, just after 2.15pm on the day in question.

Facts state that earlier in the month, after responding to a Snapchat message, Newsome picked up the woman and her boyfriend from Batemans Bay to live with him at his Grimwood St home.

After a week filled with verbal fights, the woman received a Snapchat message from a person who was “being friendly” with her.

When her boyfriend identified the person as a friend of Newsome, he confronted him.

Newsome then told the pair to “get the f--k out’’ of his home.

The pair left their suitcases and belongings at the home and returned six days later and found their possessions strewn on the front lawn before Newsome stormed outside with a black baseball bat.

During a confrontation about the dumped property, the men wrestled each other in an attempt to get control of the baseball bat.

They fought so hard they broke the veranda railing and fell through it, slamming onto the gravel and lawn.

The woman then began striking Newsome with the baseball bat while he wrestled with her partner, causing his head to bleed and him to suffer a seizure.

The couple ran away physically unharmed but Newsome soon recovered from his seizure and – to the pair’s shock – caught up with them at Woodville Rd, brandishing a thick-handled flick knife in his right hand.

He first fought with the teenage man, stabbing him under his right shoulder, before knifing the woman on her left forearm.

Fact sheets stated the male victim immediately felt the feeling down his right arm leave, while the woman “felt something running down her left arm and saw a huge amount of blood’’.

Newsome eventually walked away before collapsing on the grass in a semi-conscious state.

The facts state bystanders, who had stopped on Woodville Rd because of a minor car accident, called an ambulance for the trio.

“The offender had an obvious head injury with significant blood, contusions and bruising,’’ the facts state.

“(The paramedic) confirmed that the offender only had one injury to his head.’’

After initially resisting getting into the ambulance so he could wait for a relative to arrive, an anxious Newsome agreed to enter.

But he launched into a rant, according to the facts, stating “I want to die” and “I want to go to jail”.

Newsome then said “I stabbed them” before raising his right arm to his neck in a stabbing motion.

“The offender became increasingly agitated, repeatedly stating he ‘wanted to die’ and ‘was going to jail’, thrashing in the stretcher,” the facts state.

A paramedic eventually sedated Newsome, who slept the rest of the way to Blacktown Hospital.

During two days at Westmead Hospital, the 18-year-old man underwent surgery to stem heavy bleeding after suffering an arterial injury and a “penetrating injury” to his right shoulder.

The woman sustained two stab wounds to her left forearm, receiving 12 stitches to stem the bleeding, and was discharged from hospital the same day.

Newsome’s intensive correction order, which will run until July 2027, requires him to undertake 100 hours of community service work.

He must also abstain from illegal drugs and has to undertake rehabilitation for his ADHD and any underlying mental health issues.
