2020 Golden Slipper at Rosehill Gardens to exclude crowd

One of the world’s richest horseracing events will exclude punters and fashionistas from the racetrack following recently-announced crowd bans to deal with the coronavirus.

The Golden Slipper at Rosehill Gardens on March 21 will proceed without a crowd in the wake of precautions to curb the number of coronavirus cases escalating.

The decision by Racing NSW follows Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s decision to ban events with 500 or more people, from Monday.

“We haven’t come to a final conclusion but the expectation would be we would run the meeting without a crowd,’’ a Racing NSW spokesman said.

Tomorrow’s Chandon Ladies Day at Rosehill will proceed but the Caulfield meet in Melbourne will close to the public.

The March 21 event at Rosehill race includes the $3.5 million Longines Golden Slipper — the world’s richest race for two year olds.

The Australian Turf Club said it would monitor directives from the Federal Government and Chief Medical Officer regarding crowd gatherings.

The Golden Slipper always attracts a cavalcade of celebrities and this year included Jon Stevens performing after the last race.

Racing NSW said it was monitoring the status of coronavirus in the state and would implement more hygiene measures to deal with COVID-19 at tomorrow’s event.

That includes more hand sanitising stations and extra cleaning staff to concentrate on the disinfection of common surfaces.

“There is also to be minimum twice daily periodic disinfection of all common surfaces used by industry, including but not limited to the jockeys and stewards’ room,’’ a spokesman said.

No communal serving of food such as buffets or shared servings will go ahead.

All dining is to be served by staff to minimising any close contact with patrons.
